FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What does “Ungraded” (Edible Impact) refer to?

A: Our name alludes to the USDA system of “grading produce”— a set of quality standards largely based on cosmetic features rather than taste or nutritional content. This system provides growers with monetary incentives to leave tasty, nutritious, if a little odd looking produce unharvested. As our produce isn’t going through the industrial food system, it is “ungraded”—our name calls for a radical transformation of what we value in the produce we purchase, it envisions a food system that places taste and nutrition at the forefront, all while reducing waste.

Q: Where does your produce come from?

A: Our goal is to rescue as much produce from going to waste while supporting local farmers and providing an affordable and delicious product! To do this, we primarily source “ugly” and surplus veggies from local farms and excess wholesale fruit. During cooler months where produce isn’t as abundant in North Carolina, we will also source from out of state farms to smooth over any seasonal gaps and ensure that you continue to receive a diverse array of produce each week!

Q: Is your produce organic?

A: We do work with some organic growers, and we will indicate when your box contains organic produce. We work with many small farms that cannot afford to become certified organic, but still use responsible growing practices!

Q: What comes in each box?

A: We try to offer as much seasonal fresh produce as possible! The contents of your box will vary depending on the product you subscribe to, but we send out a weekly newsletter detailing what will be in your box that week, along with recipes that integrate the produce featured in your box!.

Q: How often do you deliver?

A: You can choose to have your delivery made every week or every other week. If you’d like to change the frequency of your deliveries, simply go through your account [feature coming soon]

Q: When do I get billed?

A: You will get automatically billed at 9 am on Wednesday prior to your delivery.

Q: Can I skip or cancel a delivery? Cancel my subscription?

A: Feature coming soon.

Q: What exactly is “ugly produce”?

A: The term “ugly produce” refers to produce that is unconventionally shaped, atypically colored, or a different size than what you’d usually encounter in a grocery store. “Ugly produce” is not produce that is bruised, old, less tasty, or less nutritious. It is exactly the same as its “normal” counterparts, save for looking different. We support efforts to regulate the sale of bruised, old, and insect damaged produce, but have set out to prove that funny-looking fruit and vegetables deserve our love!

There is no need to be home when we drop off your box. Instead of knocking, we’ll send you a text when your box has been delivered!

Q: Do you deliver to apartments?

A: We certainly do! You can leave delivery instructions when signing up such as a gate code or where to leave the box. If your apartment has card-only access, we can leave your box at the leasing office, too.

Q: How does the Refer-A-Friend program work?

A: We want to thank you for spreading the UP love! When someone signs up and says that you referred them on the signup form, you’ll both receive $5 off your next box.

Q: What can I do with the empty boxes?

A: Ungraded Produce cannot reuse boxes due to food safety guidelines, but you can! Feel free to recycle or reuse your boxes! Additionally, ice packs can also be recycled. Simply dispose of the non-toxic gel in the garbage, and then recycle the outer material!
